| Passports
|
| Everyone
traveling to the US will need their own machine-readable passport.
Your passport is machine-readable if there are two lines of letters,
numbers and ´>´s printed at the bottom of the personal
information page (the page with photograph and personal details).
The text will be on a white strip on older machine-readable passports
and directly on the pink page of newer passports. If there are
no lines of text, the passport is not machine-readable. Please
visit the UK
passport agency website for further information. |

| ESTA - Electronic System for Travel
Authorisation |
| Everyone
visiting the US under the visa waiver program from January
12th 2009 will need to obtain an electronic travel authorisation
number before boarding their flight to the US. This needs to requested
online at least 3 days before you fly. More information can be found
by visiting this
US embassy document link. |

| Travel Insurance |
Make sure that
you have comprehensive travel insurance. Medical costs in USA
are very high (there's no NHS to cover you) whether you need to
visit a doctor, medical centre or hospital. Remember that accidents
do happen, people still spend too long in the hot Florida sun
for example. If you have to cancel your holiday due to illness,
your costs would be covered. Your travel insurance should also
cover you if your flight is delayed or you lose your luggage and
ideally should also cover your valuables against theft. Take the
documentation with you as you may need to produce your policy
to obtain any medical treatment or make a claim, or phone the
insurance company to get authorisation. For your own 'piece of
mind' get insured as soon as you have booked any part of your
holiday, then relax and enjoy.
Florida, well the whole of the USA, is not a place to travel without
adequate insurance. |

| Driving
Licence |
| Don't
forget to take your driving licence as you will need this if you
plan to hire a car, as most people do. It is advisable to take both
parts (card and paper) if you have the newer photo card type. Also,
the driver should not drink too much alcohol on the plane ! The
drink driving laws in Florida are extremely strict and will invalidate
your insurance if you are caught or involved in an accident. |

| Driving
to villa - toll roads |
| Before leaving the airport make
sure you have some change or small denomination dollar bills for
the toll roads you are likely to encounter on the route to the villa,
$2.00 - $5.00 depending on which airport and your chosen route.
You may encounter several separate toll booths on your journey.
And don't forget that the driver sits in the left hand seat and
to drive on the right hand carriageway ! |
| |
| Driving and cars in general |
| Most,
if not all, hire cars are automatic so you don't have to change
gear, so you can concentrate on the driving. The parking brake
is often a foot pedal under the dashboard (and it may have a release
lever in the footwell) rather than a hand brake. So familiarise
yourself with the car controls before you leave the airport. The
rental company should also provide a basic driving map showing
the major routes and attractions, we will also provide driving
directions showing our suggested route from your arrival airport.
Most of the driving laws are similar to the UK except that you
are on the other side (I say the wrong side!) of the car and roads.
There are a couple of major exceptions, you can turn right at
a red traffic light at most junctions (a sign will tell you if
you cannot) - but only if you stop to check it is clear and safe
to do so. There are no roundabouts to confuse you.
If a yellow school bus stops you cannot overtake it, even coming
the other way you have to stop at a working stationary school
bus. |
| Parking isn't usually a problem
as America is car orientated so you'll find parking spaces everywhere.
The individual spaces are normally much larger than those we are
used to in the UK and the car parks, especially at the theme parks
are huge, so make a note of where you park the car. We have been
told by several guests that they have had to embarrassingly ask
park security to help them find their cars!
Remember - Parked cars will get very hot inside so be careful
where you leave your cameras, lunch, drinks or children, they
may be ruined when you return! And do not leave any valuables
on display in the car. |
It is compulsory in Florida to turn your headlights
on as well as your wipers when it rains, and it can rain heavily
in rainstorms and if you cannot see clearly there is no disgrace
in pulling off the road and waiting for it to ease.
Make sure that carry your driving licence and car rental documents
with you whenever you are out and about in the hire car. |

| Food
on arrival at villa |
| It
has likely been a long day travelling once you first arrive at the
villa. Our hot tip is to drop the suitcases off at the villa and
then visit the local Walmart superstore, which is only a 5 minute
drive away and is open 24 hours. Drive out of the Cumbrian Lakes
development, turn right and head up Poinciana Blvd turn right into
Oren Brown Road and there is an entrance on the right into the Walmart
car park at the end of the road before the junction with the 192
highway. Alternatively, there is also a supermarket a few doors
down from our management company office where you register and pick
up the keys, smaller than Walmart but a great selection of food
and drink. |
| Our
Management Company can arrange a welcome pack of basic supplies
if you prefer, but we prefer the choice at the supermarkets ! |
| |
| What
do we not supply? |
| We
do not provide beach size towels, the villa does have an adequate
supply of normal US sized bath towels. These should not be taken
and used outside of the villa so you should bring or buy your
own for use by the pool or at the water parks and beaches. We
do not provide any food or drink. Upon your arrival you should
find some hand soap and toilet rolls but probably not enough to
last your entire stay. The same is true for the laundry and dish
washing machine soap. |
|
| Pool
Heating
|
| The
pool can be heated for an additional fee. It is recommended that
this pool heating is used over the cooler winter months to take
the chill off the water. But please note that the water will never
be as warm as bath water and that the heaters effectiveness is largely
dependant on the weather conditions and prevailing temperature. |
| |
| Telephone |
| A new addition to the service we offer at the
villa is that of free phone calls. Local, long distance and international
calls to land lines are free of charge to guests. The emergency
number in the USA for Police/Fire/Paramedics is 911. |
| |
| Internet access |
| We do not provide a PC or broadband access at
the villa but the phone does have a modem data port if you wish
to take your own laptop. You will need to be able to connect to
a dial-up ISP in America. We use Budgetdialup
for low cost US dial up
access. Visit their website and download the connection software
to your laptop before you go. They normally offer the first 5 hours
of connect time as a free trial period and after that you can purchase
more time at a very reasonable cost. |
| There are several Internet Cafes nearby, the
2 closest to the villa are probably Manhatten Coffee (from the villa
turn left on to the 192 and it is about 1/2 mile on the right hand
side) and World of Coffee at the Buena Vista Outlet Mall on the
535 (see our shopping links). |
| |
| Eating out |
| There are literally hundreds of places to eat
out around the Kissimmee and Orlando area, places to suite all budgets
and tastes. Generally they offer good value for money and the portions
are generous in comparison to those in the UK. It is worth noting
that food within the theme parks can be expensive so many visitors
make an early stop at one of the many breakfast diners or all you
can eat buffets on the way to the park, or have a large breakfast
at the villa before setting out. Tipping is customary and expected
in restaurants where you get a sit down service from a waiter, it
is typical to tip 15-20% of the total bill for good service. A service
charge might already have been added to the bill in some places
so check first. Tipping is not necessary at restaurants where you
order at the counter and then carry your food to the table, such
as at a McDonald's or KFC. See our restaurants
link page for ideas. |
|
| Dress code and what to pack |
You don't need loads of clothes
as most people in Florida dress casual all the time. Even in the
'upmarket' restaurants smart casual is fine. Our villa has a washing
machine, dryer and even a ironing board for you to use so do not
pack too many clothes in your suitcase. You will probably want to
pack your swim wear so you can take advantage of our pool and cool
off after a hard day having fun, or for visiting one of the many
water parks or the beaches. You will need to pack your own beach
towels (or buy some cheap ones at WalMart once you arrive) to use
at the parks as the villa towels should not be removed even for
a day trip. Don't forget to take comfortable shoes or trainers for
walking round the theme parks or shopping malls.
Don't pack food in your luggage as you will sign a Customs declaration
that you don't have any food with you when you enter Florida and
they do random scans and searches.
Don't panic if you have forgotten anything, within 5 minutes drive
of our villa is a huge Wal-Mart
superstore that sells everything and anything 24 hours a day. And
we mean literally almost anything that you might need, it contains
a pharmacy, opticians, photograph printing services and a bank as
well as selling food, clothes, shoes and toys. It also caters for
people with special dietary requirements and different nationalities.
If you have any questions on what to take please ask us. |
